Here it is, ladies and gentleman! The 2012 spring movie hit, the best of the best and the greatest of the great… a team of highly skilled superheroes ready to save the world together. It’s “The Avengers”! With over 1.5 billion $ at the Box Office, around 347.000 votes on IMDb and an 8.5 average, “The Avengers” has clearly made a good impression. But what is this movie all about? What are the “if”, “but” and “what” about it? What are the stories behind the characters? Find out these and more in the following paragraphs:
“The Avengers” is a follow-up of the 2011 “Thor” movie. It brings into attention a rather skinny fellow by the name of Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Tired of being in his brother, Thor’s shadow, Loki tries to become the “rightful” king of Asgard – the heavenly fictional realms of the Northern Gods. After being thrown into the abyss of space, Loki goes to Earth, with the aid of a teleporting device and power source called the Tesseract. The last part is the scene that appears at the beginning of “The Avengers”… the rest being part of the “Thor” storyline. Loki then steals the device and corrupts Dr. Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) and Clint Barton, or “Hawkeye”, into joining his side. After getting away, the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. (a fictional espionage and law-enforcement agency), Nick Fury assembles a team of superheroes, all of which have their own comic books and movies to explain where they come from. They must fight Loki and his allies, in order to save planet Earth from destruction:
1) Natasha Romanoff/ “Black Widow”
She is a former Russian spy that changed sides and now works for the Americans and S.H.I.E.L.D. She is, as her name implies, the kind of person that uses her amazing sex-appeal to get what she wants out of her male partners/ opponents. She is a master of seduction and the martial arts.
2) Dr. Bruce Banner/ “The Hulk”
- played by: Eric Bana, Edward Norton, Mark Ruffalo (in “The Avengers”)
- appeared in: comic books, “Hulk”, “The Incredible Hulk”, “The Avengers”
The Hulk is a result of accidental exposure to a detonation test of a gamma radiation bomb. When Banner becomes angry or is in danger, he mutates into a gigantic green muscle-packed monster. Apparently his skin is bullet proof and he is highly damage resistant and full of superhuman strength. He appears to be indestructible.
3) Tony Stark/ “Iron Man”
- played by: Robert Downey Jr.
- appeared in: comic books, “Iron Man”, “The Incredible Hulk”, “Iron Man 2”, “The Avengers”
Tony Stark is a “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” that suffered a chest injury during a kidnapping. After building a suit of armor, he escapes and returns to his home, in the USA. He then improves the suit and turns it into a highly advanced piece of military weaponry and indestructible armor. Thus, The Iron Man is born!
4) Steve Rogers/ Captain America
- played by: Chris Evans
- appeared in: comic books, “Captain America: The First Avenger”, “The Avengers”
Being to skinny to join the US Army in the fight against The Nazis and then Hydra (a fictional terrorist organization that became the new threat of the Axis, after defeating Hitler and the Nazis), Steve Rogers participates in an experiment to boost his physical strength. He is portrayed wearing an American flag uniform and a star shield. He is the embodiment of the 1940’s American patriotism and moral values.
5) Thor Odinson
He is the son of Odin All-Father, who lives in the Norse mythological realm of Asgard. He is recognized for his trademark armor, red cape, long blond hair and his mighty hammer. Thor’s hammer has the power to destroy everything in sight. It is the heaviest thing in the world to others, because only Thor is worthy to hold it!
6) Clint Barton/ Hawkeye
He was trained to use the arrow at the Carson Carnival of Traveling Wonders. He is inspired by Iron Man to wear a costume. He is a minor character, which is why he gets abducted by Loki and joins the Avengers team in the second half of the movie.
7) Nick Fury (technically not a superhero, but he is responsible for gathering and leading the superhero group)
- played by: Samuel L. Jackson
- appeared in: comic books, “Iron Man”, “Iron Man 2″, “Thor”, “Captain America: The First Avenger”, “The Avengers”
He is the a former World War Two hero, CIA agent and current leader of the S.H.I.E.L.D. organization. He is also the head of the Avengers initiative, the one responsible for gathering the superheroes.
